Chlorthalidone is used to treat high blood pressure and fluid retention (edema) caused by heart failure, liver disease, or kidney disorders. It works as a diuretic, helping the body eliminate excess salt and water through urine.
Take Chlorthalidone exactly as prescribed, usually once daily in the morning. It can be taken with or without food, but should be taken at the same time each day.
Inform your doctor if you have kidney problems, diabetes, or gout. Monitor your blood pressure, electrolyte levels, and kidney function regularly during treatment.
Do not use Chlorthalidone if you are allergic to chlorthalidone or sulfa drugs, or if you are unable to urinate. It is contraindicated in patients with severe kidney or liver dysfunction.
Common side effects include dizziness, increased urination, and low potassium levels. Serious effects may include dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, or irregular heartbeat.
Chlorthalidone may interact with lithium, other blood pressure medications, and anti-diabetic drugs. Let your doctor know about all medications and supplements you are taking.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's close to your next dose, skip the missed one—do not take two doses at once.
Overdose symptoms may include extreme dizziness, fainting, or electrolyte disturbances. Seek immediate medical help if an overdose is suspected.
Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep the medication out of reach of children and pets.
